SHOW DESCRIPTION: In this podcast I talk about keeping our brains and bodies healthy when it’s extremely hot outside. Although there still needs to be more research on how extreme temperatures affect the brain, they definitely have a negative impact with prolonged periods of heat exposure. Why? Temperature is one the main driver of chemical reactions, so changes in temperature affect the biochemistry of the brain and body.

I'm Dr. Caroline Leif and welcome to my podcast, Cleaning Up the Mental Mace.

0:08.7

And today we're going to talk a little bit about Cleaning Up the Mental Mace from the

0:11.5

Sixth Stream Heat.

0:12.9

I mean, it's been crazy that the global heat changes around the world and the extreme

0:21.3

heats of up to 110, 120 some places recorded at 135 for long periods of time.

0:28.6

So we're going to learn how to meet the beat the mental heat because this may be with

0:32.8

climate change, what's going to happen in the future, but for now in this time and this

0:37.7

moment, there are some things that we can do to help and to help build our resilience

0:43.2

in our brain and our body and to help with our mental health.

0:47.3

So that's what I want to talk about today, how to beat the mental heat, how to keep

0:50.5

a cool head as the heat cranks up, avoiding rainfall, memory loss and other mental health

0:54.7

concerns related to high temperatures.

0:57.5

First of all, let's talk about what temperature does in the brain.

1:00.6

Temperature's not a bad thing.

1:03.0

Temperature actually drives the neurochemical reactions and the neurochemistry and the biochemistry

1:08.8

of the brain and the body.

1:10.4

So it's the main driver.

1:12.2

So we need heat, but we need it in a balanced way, kind of at the Goldilocks Principle,

1:17.0

not too much, not too little and just enough.

1:19.4

So obviously currently at the moment, we're getting too much, but now let's think of the

1:22.9

fact that we have things like saunas, where people go into states of extreme heat, but

1:28.4

for limited periods of time, generally the recommended time for a sauna is around about
