Another slogan that we hear is, but they love each other.

In fact, this is really at the core of a lot of the pro-same-sex marriage movement and things

like that is, but they love each other.

They love each other. love each other there's one

problem with this though they never define the word love I have no idea what is

meant by love in this particular scenario their love seems to be generally about the intensity of emotions and

desires for each other. Hey that can be intense, but that is not a good definition of love. You know

what you know where a good definition of love. You know what? You know where a good definition of love is?

In the Bible. And in fact, as Christians, we have a specific understanding of love that is revealed to us in the scriptures

where Paul seemed to try to be correcting the false understanding of love of the culture

around him just like we need to continue to do and so we have that in 1st

Corinthians 13 but let me take you to a different passage today.

You're familiar with that. We've talked about it already. But let me look at 1st John, chapter 3,

verse 16. The less commonly quoted John 316, 1st John 316, this is the chief example of love in the Bible.

Here's how you can test things. Is it love? Well this is what love looks like first John 316 says by this

we know love because he laid down his life for us and we also ought to lay down

our lives for the brethren.

Laying down your life or self-sacrifice

for the benefit of others, that is a great example of love.

In fact, by this we know love. He sacrificed himself for the benefit of

others. This is so different than the kind of thing they mean when they say but they

love each other. You mean they'll make sacrifices for the other person's benefit?
