Summary

Before the DNC released its unfinished autopsy report on May 21, The Bulwark published an exclusive behind-the-scenes article with an accounting of what happened inside the Biden and Harris presidential campaigns in 2024. It was written by Rob Flaherty who served as deputy campaign manager. Flaherty had been interviewed for the autopsy and, before anything was released from the DNC, felt it was critical to pull back the curtain on his view that Democrats ran a campaign built for a world that no longer exists. From his descriptions of a political brand failure, what happened during negotiations with Joe Rogan and the breakdowns he says happened around social media, it is a more complete "autopsy" than what was ultimately released. To bring Flaherty's piece to you as quickly as possible, we've used computer-generated narration with an intro by The Bulwark's Sam Stein.

Hey everyone, it's me, Sam Stein, managing editor at the bulwark. Now, you might have seen on Thursday that

0:05.9

the Democratic National Committee finally released its autopsy report looking at what went wrong in the

0:11.4

2024 election. The report's a mess. And that's not actually my opinion. Even the chair of the DNC,

0:17.7

Ken Martin, called it an unfinished product that was riddled with errors and

0:21.5

pretty much wasn't suitable for public consumption. He only released it because he was under

0:25.7

tremendous pressure to do so. But it raises a question, what would an actual legitimate autopsy

0:31.8

report look like? What would it say? What lessons could we learn from it? Well, lucky for you, we have something

0:38.4

about as close as possible to a more finished product. A week ago, the bulwark published a piece

0:44.3

by Rob Flaherty, who was a senior member of the Biden and Harris campaigns in the last

0:48.7

presidential election. Now, the piece was candid, and it was a detailed look at what Rob told

0:54.1

people who put together that actual DNC autopsy. But it went well beyond that. There was a lot of self-reflection in it and a lot of diagnosis of what went wrong and what went right. In light of the DNC releasing its report, we decided to do something we really haven't done before. We're turning Rob's piece

1:11.3

into an audio read. Now, a few disclaimers. The voice you're about to hear is computer generated.

1:16.9

This is also a long, I mean, long read. But we think you may really like it. Oh, and one more thing.

1:23.5

You can hear Rob's actual real voice on the podcast he co-hosts. It's called Nobody Knows Anything. Check that out afterwards. All right, without further ado, here is Rob Flaherty's piece titled, Here's What I Told, the DN National Committee autopsy, the post-election report commissioned by the DNC in 2025,

2:03.1

to examine what went wrong in the 2024 campaign. And you may have heard that it was never

2:08.3

released to the public. Because of that, there's been a lot of rightful concern among Democrats about

2:13.4

their not being an honest accounting of what went wrong and what we could learn from it.

2:18.3

But there are a few people who have insight into what the autopsy report actually says and can

2:23.3

share what they know of it. I'm one of them. I was deputy campaign manager of Kamala Harris's

2:29.5

2014 presidential campaign and of Joe Biden's campaign before that. My remit was things that

2:36.6

touch the internet, social content, creators, rapid response, paid media, fundraising, digital

2:43.8

organizing, and a few other odds and ends along the way. I was one of the few campaign staff
