Summary

(Exodus 38:1-2) The brazen altar is a picture of Christ’s substitutionary work on the cross. The altar is full of symbolism: the wood as Christ’s body and the brass as God’s judgment. The bound sacrifice, the horns of the altar, and the fire from heaven that consumed the offering point to Jesus who bore our sin and God’s wrath on the cross, declaring the work of redemption finished and all-sufficient for salvation. When most people think of the Old Testament tabernacle, they picture an ancient tent,

0:13.0

distant and unfamiliar, something that feels far removed from everyday life.

0:18.5

But what if that sacred structure was actually designed by God to point us

0:23.6

directly to everything we have in Jesus Christ? In this study, fully furnished, finding all you need in Christ,

0:30.6

Scott invites us to step inside the tabernacle and discover that every detail from the altar to the

0:38.5

mercy seat was a divine preview of the Savior to come. Let's join Scott now. Have you

0:48.9

been to the altar? We typically think of an altar as a place in the church building where people assemble to kneel and pray.

0:57.6

That's good. It's wonderful to have corporate prayer in that way.

1:01.7

Or perhaps you think of your prayer closet, the private place where you go to kneel and talk to God.

1:07.4

There's a wonderful term that really is not used much anymore, but it's a beautiful

1:11.6

term. People used to refer to the family altar, meaning that families would gather and worship

1:16.8

together. But the altar that I'm speaking of is not that. The altar I'm speaking of is the first

1:22.9

altar, the most important altar, the altar that you must visit before you can go to any other altar,

1:28.7

and that altar is the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ.

1:32.9

When we last studied, we were in Exodus chapter 27.

1:36.2

We read the first two verses.

1:38.2

Did you know that almost verbatim, those two verses are repeated in Exodus 38, verses 1 and 2?

1:47.3

Moses did exactly what God said,

1:52.3

and in chapter 38, verse one, it says, and he made the altar of burnt offering of shit and wood.

1:58.3

Five cubits was the length thereof and five cubits the breadth thereof. It was four square and three cubits the height thereof, and he made the horns thereof on the four corners of it.

2:02.6

The horns thereof were of the same, and he overlaid it with brass.

2:07.7

This is the first piece of furniture in the Old Testament tabernacle.
