Summary

We hear from a lot of people looking for “happiness” or “enlightenment” like it’s a status or level to achieve in our lives. But really, it’s a state of being. And whenever we are present in the moments of our life, that is enlightenment. Happiness isn’t waiting for you somewhere in the future — it’s here, right now. Learn more about your ad choices. Hi, it's Andy here and welcome to Radiohead Space and welcome to the start of the week.

0:16.5

Very often I get asked the question, how do I analyze or how do I work out whether

0:21.3

I'm progressing in my practice of mindfulness, in my practice of meditation and it's always

0:27.0

a difficult question to answer and it's even if you don't do any meditation, even if

0:31.4

you don't practice mindfulness, this is still sort of very relevant because it's how

0:35.5

do we get a sense of whether we are being more present in our life.

0:41.4

And I always come back to the same story that my teacher chaired with me so when I went

0:46.8

off to become a monk, I definitely went with the idea that enlightenment for one of a

0:51.8

better word was something that I didn't have, that it existed somewhere else outside

0:57.6

of my mind as it existed at that time and perhaps even that it existed in another place

1:02.6

that I needed to go somewhere else to find it and get it and I thought that when I went

1:06.7

there that all of my negative thoughts were going to disappear.

1:10.1

I thought that all of my difficult and challenging emotions would disappear.

1:14.3

I don't know really what I was thinking, I just thought that I would experience a mind

1:19.2

that was always peaceful and always calm and in my mind that was what enlightenment was.

1:24.4

And of course when I went there I discovered that well actually in sitting you witnessed

1:31.7

the mind definitely sometimes it's calm but sometimes it's busy, sometimes the emotions

1:36.6

feel very pleasant but sometimes they're very unpleasant as well and I remember having

1:41.0

this discussion with my teacher and he said look rather than thinking of a place of eternal

1:46.2

happiness and a place of enlightenment rather, thinking of that as something that's going

1:51.2

to happen to you in the future, instead think about enlightenment more as being present

1:56.9

in this moment.
