We've talked a lot about lavender both on the YouTube channel and here on the podcast but we're doing a specific episode today for how to cultivate it in

0:21.9

containers.

0:23.4

It is a plant that has uses in the kitchen

0:25.8

and in sort of aeromatics, so to speak.

0:29.0

But even just as an aesthetic ornamental planting,

0:32.1

sometimes growing it in a container gives it that

0:34.0

look that you're going for because you can choose the container that fits with your space, all these

0:38.1

sorts of things. So how do we cultivate it in containers? How does that actually change? I would say not a whole lot, not a whole lot, but there are some

0:47.6

considerations. Lavender, when you're making a soil mix for lavender, it wants a somewhat gritty mix. It's a

0:54.9

Mediterranean herb, Mediterranean plant, it wants that sort of loose, somewhat

0:59.5

alkaline, moderately fertile but really not super rich in nutrients and it needs to drain and

1:05.4

aerate very well. It's going to root rot out really quickly, more so than other

1:09.8

plants and it's going to struggle if you really mulch it like crazy.

1:14.8

Again, it's really kind of an arid plant, an arid climate lover.

1:19.2

So if you were to make a mix for lavender, something that you might want to do would be a potting mix, then you mix in,

1:26.8

well three parts potting mix, excuse me, then you mix in some clay pebbles,

1:31.1

something nice and large, you know, some rocks, something like that, and then some

1:36.5

pumice, right? Then you can put a little compost, whatever in there. Another thing you could do,

1:40.7

if you wanted to get a little bit less complex is just take potting soil one to one with either purlite or sand or some kind of fine rock or gravel type of thing.

1:50.0

Now, what kind of pot should you choose? Well it depends on how big you want your

1:55.2

lavender to get. I would say most lavender can get up to around mmm man I mean they can

2:01.6

actually get really crazy.
