Continuing on, Gorbachev relates his growing burden of responsibility in the Stavropold Comsemal in the 1950s.

Due to Khrushchev's move away from Stalin's version of control of all independent thought,

Gorbachev remembers how he and Professor Larian Rudenko founded a club to discuss issues within

society, something that would have been unheard of under Stalin.

The club became wildly successful.
