Summary

Acts 13:36-43 - For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep and was laid with his fathers and saw corruption, 37 but he whom God raised up did not see corruption. 38 Let it be known to you therefore, brothers, that through this man forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, 39 and by him everyone who believes is freed[c] from everything from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses. 40 Beware, therefore, lest what is said in the Prophets should come about: 41 “‘Look, you scoffers, be astounded and perish; for I am doing a work in your days, a work that you will not believe, even if one tells it to you.’” 42 As they went out, the people begged that these things might be told them the next Sabbath. 43 And after the meeting of the synagogue broke up, many Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who, as they spoke with them, urged them to continue in the grace of God.

Hello, my friends, welcome back. It is time for the morning mindset. It's time for you and me to get our minds aligned with the truth of God. If you're new to the morning mindset, my name is Kerry Green.

I host this. I walk us through the scriptures so that we can be encouraged in our faith and live this day with the view toward bringing glory to our Savior, Jesus Christ. That's what this is all about. So welcome.

We are walking through the book of Acts. We are in chapter 13 today, looking at verses 36 through 43. And we're right in the middle of a speech that the Apostle Paul has been requested to give in a synagogue.

0:41.0

Really on the spot, spontaneously, he was asked and so he stood and he pulled data information from the past of the people who were listening because they were all Jewish people. And he's using that to tell the story of Jesus, the Messiah who flows right out of those Old Testament stories.

And he's continuing here in verse 36. He says, for David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep. It was laid with his fathers and saw corruption. Now that means his body decayed in the grave. He's referring back to a verse just before where prophecy had said, you will not let your Holy One see corruption. And he's pointing out that wasn't speaking about David.

1:26.0

So continuing on, he says, but he whom God raised up did not see corruption. That's Jesus. You see, he's tying Jesus into the story. Let it be known to you, therefore, brothers, that through this man, forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. And by him, everyone who believes is freed from everything from which you cannot be freed by the law of Moses.

Beware, therefore, less what is said in the prophets should come about. And he's going to quote from the prophets now, look you scoffers, be astounded and perish for I am doing a work in your days, a work that you will not believe even if one tells it to you.

As they went out, the people begged that these things might be told them the next Sabbath. And after the meeting of the synagogue broke up, many Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who as they spoke with them, urged them to continue in the grace of God.

Do you see what happened here? Paul was pretty effective in pulling together the common ground that these Jewish people already had with the common ground of how that history connected to Jesus and was actually fulfilled in Jesus.

2:43.0

It's pretty amazing how we did that. And you and I have that opportunity when people ask us about our faith or when we have the opportunity to speak into someone's life about our faith.

2:52.0

But what I want us to key in on here is one of the phrases that's saying here in the quote that Paul used from the Old Testament. God said, I am doing a work in your days, a work that you will not believe even if one tells it to you.

3:10.0

And what was that work? Well, it was the work of bringing about the Messiah through the generations of Israel until the day Jesus was born of a virgin. We celebrated at Christmas. He lived his perfect life. He worked his ministry and he was crucified for the sins of many.

3:31.0

You see, my friends, Jesus is the answer that people need, whether they know what or not. And most people won't believe it, but those who do are going to see God doing a work in their day that's going to astound them.

3:46.0

And my friends, the same is true for us, even after becoming believers in Jesus Christ. God is doing a work in our lives. And it's our job to open our eyes and to look for his hand at work.

3:58.0

To see the mighty things he's doing in our lives and the lives of friends, family, to keep praying for his work to be done, asking him to open hearts, asking him to reveal himself, because really my friends, when we see Jesus for who he really is, everything else pales by comparison.

4:19.0

Nothing else matters at that point. And we become devoted followers of the Lord Jesus Christ. I hope that's you that I just described. I hope you have given your heart to Christ.

4:33.0

But if you haven't, let me just compel you and encourage you, consider Jesus. He is the savior of the world, whether you believe it or not, whether I believe it or not, it is the facts. It's what the scripture reveals to us.

4:47.0

He is the God of all creation. He is the Lord of life. And one day he will return and he will judge every action of every man, woman, boy and girl. And he will judge mostly whether we have placed our full trust in him as our only means of reconciliation with the Father.

5:10.0

Will you accept that message? Jesus for all of us. Align our hearts with you as our Savior, as our Lord, as our King. And give us the willingness to submit everything to you, that you call the shots in our lives, and that your will goes, teaches how to be such devoted followers, to align ourselves with what you're doing in our day. In Jesus' name.
