Summary

Welcome to our new weekend series, which we are simply calling The Bible Doesn’t Say That. Over the next few weeks, we will look at some sayings and concepts people think are found in Scripture but aren’t. Perhaps you heard your grandma say them, or they were given as a piece of advice that just sounded right, so you assumed they must be in the Bible. Today, we’ll look at one of the first I heard.

I. Where Did it Originate?

II. Is There Any Truth to It?

III. What Does the Bible Say?

Talk with God: Meditate on vv. 8-10 and thank the Lord that “we shall be saved by His life” (v. 10).

Talk with others: Encourage a fellow believer who may be struggling right now, reminding them that “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1).

Talk with kids: What are some ways you can tell others about Jesus?

Welcome to Calvary Church with Skip Heitzik. We're so glad you joined us today. We've heard and even repeated catchy band-aid phrases that seem comforting and empowering.

0:10.6

Phrases like, God helps those who help themselves. Speak your truth. Follow your heart. But did you know the Bible doesn't say any of that?

0:19.9

In this study, we'll turn to Scripture to expose commonly repeated misconceptions and find

0:25.6

freedom and true power in the life-changing truth of God's Word.

Now, some of you may remember years ago, there was a late-night comedian named Jay Leno on the Tonight Show, and he would

0:41.7

frequently hit the streets. It was called Man on the Street, and he would ask random people

0:47.6

questions about world history, American history, and sometimes what the Bible says.

0:55.0

So on one occasion, he asked random people, can you name one of the Ten Commandments?

1:02.0

The most frequently given answer was, God helps those who help themselves.

1:09.0

Which not only is not one of the Ten Commandments, it's not even

1:12.7

a commandment, it's just a statement. Yet that was people's frequent answer. There are things

1:22.1

that the Bible does say that many people are unaware of, simply I think, because they don't read it. I'll give

1:29.5

you a list of those. The Bible declares that the earth is round, not flat. God sits on the

1:37.2

circle of the earth, Isaiah 4022. Also, did you know that the Bible states that the earth

1:43.7

floats freely in space and is affected

1:46.9

by gravity? You could check out Job, chapter 26, verse 7 for that. Also, we read in the scriptures

1:56.1

that creation is made out of particles that the naked eye is unable to see. That's Hebrews

2:03.1

Chapter 11. We by faith understand the things visible. We're made out of things not visible.

2:10.5

Also, the dimensions of the ark that are given in Genesis chapter 6 happen to be the perfect dimensions of a stable water

2:20.5

vessel. All of that is included in scripture. The Bible does say that. And then there are things

2:29.1

the Bible doesn't say that some people actually think it does say. Here's a short list. Adam ate an apple.

2:38.9

There were three wise men. Jonah was swallowed by a whale. Money is the root of all evil.
