Let's have a word of prayer. Father, thank you for the ability to gather together,

to consider the whole council of God, the Old and the New Testament, the foundation for the

new by looking at the old,

and some of these texts that many of us have not spent hardly any time, if any time at all, in them.

I pray that you would, you know what we need, that you would nurture us, nourish us, instruct us, admonish us, grow us up in Christ in all things we pray.

We are in this book on the verge of a change of government from the kingdom of Saul to the kingdom of David.

But it's important that on a historical overview, you understand that originally Israel was a

theocratic kingdom. It was not a monarchy. It was not a democracy. It was a theocracy. God called the shots,

gave the commands, and predominantly the featured position was not a king, but a priest. So priests

would represent the people before the Lord. God would give to leadership principles.

He did at Mount Sinai. But the priesthood were the ones in a theocratic form of government

that were predominantly the ones that God used with the children of Israel. Well, there came a time

where the priesthood became corrupt. We read in the book of judges that there was a priest by the

name of Eli who had a couple sons, Hoffney and Phineas, and God began speaking not to them, but to a little kid by the name of Samuel,

who became one of God's prophets.

Hoffney and Phineas were corrupt in their exercise of the priesthood.

God raises up Samuel.

The Ark of the Covenant is captured.
