1:00.0 | So for graduate school, I went to Columbia, New York City and it was my first time being far away from family and my long-term boyfriend that I had at the time. |
1:10.0 | I was feeling completely alone and I was really stressed and anxious. |
1:14.0 | I was feeling overwhelmed by the crowds of people, the towering skyscrapers that were above me and just the general busyness of New York City. |
1:23.0 | And the more anxious that I felt, the more I started to notice things about the city that I really didn't like, like the speed of life, the cold nature, my interactions with people, and this increasing feeling of loneliness. |
1:37.0 | And my attention really became selectively focused on all of these distressing elements. That was all that I was seeing around me. |
1:45.0 | It was really lucky that during this time I found a Buddhist community and a meditation group on campus and it was really a refuge for me. |
1:53.0 | It offered this big dose of community and the connection that I was craving. |
1:59.0 | So while I was meditating one day, my mind was recalling all of these lonely moments that I've been having recently, like the people rushing by and my yearning for friendship and community. |
2:09.0 | And I would watch my mind presenting me with these memories and stories about how bad things were turning out in New York and how I wished I was back in California. |
2:18.0 | And then I would come back to my breath and those words, those anchor words I had learned breathing in and breathing out. |
2:27.0 | And during a particularly long period of focus on my breath, I had this insight that emerged and it replaced the words breathing in and breathing out with |
2:38.0 | if you want love, give love. If you want love, give love. |
2:44.0 | Immediately I felt my heart skip a beat and this feeling of clarity just arose and bathed me in this feeling of joy. |
