0:58.0 | So a few years ago, I was browsing my local library's digital content and I found this little book called 108 Metaphors for Mindfulness by Arnie Kozak. |
1:07.0 | It's a nice little book that uses real world examples to make mindfulness more relatable and I highly recommend it. |
1:13.0 | Anyway, there's one chapter in particular I really liked called the cluttered garage. It's pretty straightforward. |
1:19.0 | The author begins the chapter by asking you to imagine your mind as a cluttered garage. You know, the type of place you can barely walk without tripping or stubbing your toe. |
1:29.0 | Well, it turns out our minds can be pretty similar. When we get busy in life and simply plow through tasks and responsibilities, it's easy for unprocessed thoughts and feelings to start piling up. |
1:40.0 | Our mind becomes a place where we can't move without bumping into painful memories or tripping over things like anxiety. |
1:47.0 | But it can also become a place filled with good things we don't appreciate, like cherished memories or dreams. |
1:54.0 | By being mindful, we start to notice what's actually going on around and inside of us. |
2:00.0 | And in turn, it gives us the opportunity for space and clarity. |
2:08.0 | And this metaphor has been really relevant in my life over the past year. |
2:12.0 | My grandmother recently passed away and we've been going through her things, or as she referred to them, her treasures. |
2:19.0 | And we're quite literally clearing out a garage. For years, my grandmother was an avid collector of glassware and tea cups, furniture, and really any sort of knickknack. |
2:31.0 | So much so that we started to look at grandma's treasures as just stuff. |
