Summary

An all too familiar sight at what was supposed to be the queen stage of the Giro d'Italia, absolute chaos before the race had even started. Negotiations for shortening the race (at the request of whom, we do not know) lead to the Queen stage removing two of its main climbs due to concerns over the weather. When the race did eventually start, coverage issues lead to the race defining moves (and pretty much all of the race) not being shown on live television. Not the greatest exhibition for cycling that is for sure.

Welcome back to Lantern Rouge Cycling Podcast, supported by LeCole here with Angie Nyson for their most shambolic year at Italian stage 16 recap. Oh my god, I can't but what do we just watch?

0:11.8

Actually, we didn't watch anything. So we're now trying to piece together on this podcast. What on earth happened today on this Monday, public holiday for some of you?

0:21.6

All right, this is how it started early start because it's going up to high altitude in May. So the starting early so they finish early and it's going to be a long stage original stage

0:30.6

two hundred and twelve K's with like fifty five hundred meters climbing, finishing in from Sicile to

0:36.2

Cortina Danpezzo. It's supposed to have a lacrosseta, Passo fedaia, Passo Puerrodoi, then Passo Giau, and then a descent to Cortina Danpezzo.

0:45.5

It's going to be a higher stage of cycling this year. We wake up, we start to hear a few little trickles.

0:51.6

A few trickles on Twitter here and there. No official statements. I see apparently a meeting has been convened between CPA head, Salvatore, R.C.S. with Venni and the UCI Commissars.

1:05.5

And what was the first sort of rumor you heard, Angie, that maybe they were canceling the final descent or something like that?

1:12.9

Well, there were lots of rumors when it comes to the park or some people were saying that they were thinking about first

1:18.4

canceling out the fedaia climb, which was the second climb of the day. If you are, well, count from the start of the stage

1:25.4

because the first one of the day is not really the one we were looking forward to start off this adventure on today's stage,

1:31.0

but they were looking at that fedaia because that descent is quite treacherous.

1:34.8

And then we heard a bit more about Cortina Danpezzo, and then eventually we also heard about just in general a shortening of the stage,

1:42.5

very vague by lots of people and... Because of what?

1:45.7

Also, okay. But why were they saying that?

1:50.0

So the weather on top of these climbs were roughly, I think it was four to five degrees at the moment that they were starting to talk about it.

1:58.4

And there was a tiny bit of snow as they were talking about it. The roads were wet in the sand because it has been raining.

2:05.2

That's normal because, yeah, in races you tend to have wet descents sometimes.

2:11.3

And those were the main reasons that everybody was thinking of, but the reason that Salvatore brought forward was

2:18.2

because of the weather that could potentially change. And not because of the weather that is currently going on, but...

2:25.2

You could get that. Exactly.

2:27.4

So I've got the official communication. So eventually the stage was shortened, and we eventually had
