It's January 1973 at George and Marsha Lucas's home in Mill Valley, California.

In his home office, George settles back to watch one of his favorite childhood TV shows Flash Gordon to take his mind off his worries.

George's new film American Graffiti is currently in limbo as Universal Studios argue over whose version will come out, theirs or George's.

And while that project's outcome hangs from the balance, George is anxious to get started on something new.

George was planning to make Apocalypse Now, a story about the Vietnam War next.

But while his producing partner Gary Kurtz was away in the Philippines scouting locations, George had a change of heart and he no longer wants to make this his follow-up film.

So George invites Gary over to break the news.

Hey George, thought I'd find you back here, but why aren't you riding? How are the Philippines?

It's gonna be perfect for Apocalypse. I even think the government might loan us some of their military hardware.

George forces a smile. Immediately, Gary can tell something's up. You're not excited.

Gary, I'm not gonna do Apocalypse. What? I just spent a month overseas scouting locations. I know. I'm sorry. What's going on George?

Have you seen the news lately? If it's not Vietnam then it's corruption at the White House and all of the movies and theaters are dark and depressing.

American Graffiti isn't. That's why it's gonna be a hit. I know it. Yeah, but THX was. Apocalypse will be too.

I don't want to spend two years of my life making a film about the Vietnam War.

Okay? What do you want to do? I don't know, but it has to be upbeat.

I want to create something that gave me the feelings that I had when I watched TV as a kid. You know, those adventure stories, heroes and distant lands.

You want to make a kid's film, George? Well, no, not just for kids, but something for all ages.

The Universal will go for that? I don't care about Universal. Not after what they've done on graffiti.

Anyway, I still have to figure what the thing is and then maybe I'll worry about who I'm gonna take it to.

But whatever it is, I think this is the path. I have a good feeling about it.
