Well hello again everyone. Welcome back to the Epic Gardening

podcast. It's Garlic Week here. We've been going on a journey of how to

select and plant your garlic and today we're going to assume for the purposes of this

podcast that we have our garlic planted and then what do we do

throughout the winter so we've got Jeremy back on from

Square Roots Farm who is the owner with his wife Dana of a

seed and culinary garlic farm up in Oregon. So Jeremy what should we be thinking

about? We've planted our garlic right and now we need to mulch it now we need to care for it. We've planted our garlic, right? And now we need to

mulch it, now we need to care for it throughout the winter. What am I trying to

think about at this point in the phase of its growth? So at this point, I recommend adding a nice layer of mulch to your garlic.

The mulch does three things.

One, it protects the garlic from, say, animals. Like you had mentioned,

he had some skunk problems. We have a lot of turkeys in our area, maybe dogs or something like that.

So it just kind of gives it a nice protection.

Also, if you're in a cold climate,

the garlic can offer a little bit of insulation sort of like a blanket to protect it. Another thing

mulch is good for is mitigating moisture.

We're up in the northwest climate.

We get a ton of rain throughout the winter.

So the mulch is really good.

If we get a lot of rain, it can kind of mitigate that moisture so that soil doesn't get

saturated if you're in a drier climate the mulch will allow the soil to
