Podcast Garlic Week Edition. We are talking again with Jeremy of

Square Roots Farm, him and his wife Dana, they are the owners, and it's a seed

garlic and a culinary garlic farm.

And so we've gone through a bit of the progression, we've gone through winter, although in the real world we haven't yet, so stay tuned.

But we're going to be talking about what to do in spring, you know, as your garlic starts to come up,

as the temperatures start to warm up.

Jeremy, what do we need to be considering in our garlic care?

Well, by this point, the garlic's been in the ground for about six months and there's a good

chance that a lot of that fertilizer that you put in there back in the fall has you know kind of been used up so it's a good idea to do a

side dressing of fertilizers sometime around March 15th.

With this application, we look to just a general,

very gentle all around fertilizer, maybe a 777 type. We typically use Dr. Earth. It's a nice organic fertilizer. It's got a lot of different nutrients in it.

It's got some microbes and mycorrhizal fungi and there.

Another great fertilizer to use is from down to earth,

that's out of Eugene, Oregon.

So those are a couple of fertilizers that we like to side dress with.

We've also seen some other farmers at this time of the year, they'll start with a foliar spray application and for that

typically what she used is a fish meal mixed with a little bit of kelp.

And what this does is just gives the plant

some micronutrients that it needs,

that you might not get with your basic just nitrogen fertilizer.
