Summary

Joanne Courtney has an impressive sporting resume, ranking among the top curlers in the world.  She's won a World Championship and competed at the Olympics for Canada. Now that she's retiring from curling at age 32, she's taking up triathlon -- and she's starting where many amateurs do:  blowing bubbles in the pool as she learns to swim as an adult, riding a bike for the first time since she was a kid, and trying to understand the nuances of pacing while running!  We talk about transitioning from elite to amateur and much more, on this week's episode of the podcast.

NTK is here.

0:06.8

Hey, people. I'm back.

And another blast from the past, a curling pal.

You've all been suffering through me talking about my curling background and the greatness

0:17.7

of Taryn the Curler in the history of Canadian sports, but we have an actual

0:23.6

good curler here.

0:25.6

Joanne Courtney is a friend who's just recently retired from the highest level of curling in the

0:32.4

0:34.2

She's a world champion, recently retired and is getting into triathlon.

And somehow we hoodwinked her into being a project athlete for motive. We're training her for her first race,

0:44.9

which will be the PTO Canadian Open and then the ultimate race being the PTO US Open where she'll do the longest distance there.

0:53.2

Yes, she came to join us here for a few days

0:56.3

for a, I guess, a sort of pseudo training camp with you, but really to learn the absolute basics,

1:01.0

because despite the fact that she's literally a top athlete on the planet, this is all brand new

1:07.2

for her. And so it's really actually been quite cool to remember things that you probably

1:12.0

forgot you didn't know back when you got into the sport and that a lot of people who are listening

1:16.2

to the podcast are experiencing right now, like, how do you pack a bike bag and how the heck do you

1:21.2

put a clip in pedal on and all that type of stuff? So fun to experience that with her and we talk a

1:26.6

lot about that. But also going from a top level athlete in the world to taking on this new sport and feeling like she's going to drown is really fascinating.

1:35.0

So we talk a lot about that on the podcast today.
