| 0:39.1 | Back in 2022, a court found that Alabama Republicans had violated the Voting Rights Act by |
| 0:45.5 | unevenly dividing the state's seven congressional districts. |
| 0:49.2 | What does that mean? |
| 0:49.9 | Basically, they drew one district around the state's most populated area, which also happened to be the most democratic and the blackest part of the state. |
| 0:58.9 | The other six districts were all drawn to favor mostly Republican and white voters in Alabama. |
| 1:05.1 | That meant that even though black voters made up about a quarter of Alabama's population, they would only get one representative |
| 1:12.4 | in Congress compared to the six that would represent mostly white Republicans in the state. |
| 1:17.9 | And even though a court ruled over a year ago that this districting was illegal, the state |
| 1:23.0 | of Alabama tried to fight the ruling by sending it to the Supreme Court twice. |
| 1:27.6 | But then the Supreme Court also ruled that the state had violated the Voting Rights Act. |
| 1:32.4 | So Republicans in Alabama went back and made tiny adjustments to their state's congressional map. |
| 1:38.3 | And those maps were also thrown out by multiple courts because they didn't make any real changes. |
| 1:44.5 | So finally, Republicans just refused to change the map anymore despite the Supreme |
