Let's get you caught up with today's seven stories.

Number one.

Biden will commute the sentences of nearly 2,500 people.

Biden announced the plan this morning.

It will apply to nonviolent drug offenders who are serving

disproportionately long sentences. It follows his move last month to commute the death sentences

of 37 federal inmates to life without parole. Biden had promised to reduce the federal prison

population before handing over the reins of the White House

to President-elect Donald Trump on Monday.

He's faced criticism for not moving more quickly to give clemency to other people behind bars,

particularly after he granted a sweeping pardon to his son, Hunter, last month.

Now, Biden is spending his final days in office taking actions

that could be hard for Trump to undo. He has even been considering issuing preemptive pardons

for figures who might face the hostility of the incoming administration. His flurry of executive

actions comes even as White House staff have been packing up their offices.

Some are planning to be out by the end of today.
