The woods and wetlands outside of Chicago suburbs near the Wisconsin border have a very sorted past.

Apparently, notorious crime boss Al Capone used to live nearby and is rumored to have dumped bodies into the bog surrounding the nearest village.

That village, Fox Lake, has since become infamous for another body found there.

Joe Glenowitz, a lieutenant with the Fox Hills Police Force. Lieutenant Joe, also known as GI Joe for his flat top haircut and overall military demeanor, had proudly served in the US Army and Army Reserves where he received several service awards.

But on the morning of September 1st, 2015, Joe missed roll call. He had called in at 7.52am stating that he was following three suspicious individuals, two white men and one black, two an abandoned cement factory near the swamp, which had recently become a target for vandals and squatters.

When the dispatcher asked if he needed a second unit, he told her no. Joe was a tough guy. He was physically fit and had 30 years of experience as a police officer.

So there was no doubt that he could hold his own, but against three men?

Joe must have realized that because four minutes later, he called for backup and reported that the suspects had taken off in the direction of the swamp.

Communication with Joe suddenly became silent. When backup arrived, they scoured the marshy terrain looking for Joe.

The landscape did not make it easy. The brush was nearly eight feet tall, making it very hard to see anything. When the officers on site and the dispatch tried to call Joe on his radio, there was no answer. Suddenly, they heard a noise and ran toward it. That's when they found officer Joe Glenowitz. Dead.

Face down in the mud. He had been shot twice. Once we're got out that an officer was down, a massive and I mean massive manhunt was launched to find the three murder suspects.

When the manhunt proved to be unsuccessful and investigation began to find out who could have killed this hometown hero.

Joe's murder had become a huge media story and there was enormous pressure to make an arrest and close the case. But the surprising results of the investigation left law enforcement and the public stunned.
