Hello and welcome to the sleepy bookshelf,

where we put down our worries from the date and pick up a good book.

In our last episode, we read the final pages of Rainbow Valley by L.M. Montgomery,

the next in the series of Anne of Green Gables books.

This is a recap of the last episode. But be warned, this is your spoiler alert. If you haven't listened to the whole book and you don't want to know how it ends yet, stop this episode now.

Mr. Meredith heard from Mrs. Alec Davis that Carl had thrown an eel into Mrs. Carr's buggy on purpose,

and that she had been quite frightened by it. He marched home and brought Carl into his study.

Carl explained that it was true, but that Mrs. Carr had driven by and called them all varmints,

and then on her way back past them, the other boys had dared him to throw in the eel.

He had thought it was dead and that there would be no harm. It was gravely agreed that Carl would return to the study after supper to be whipped.

When the time came, however, Mr. Meredith couldn't do it. He had never whipped any of his

children before. Una crept in to comfort her father and heard him talking to himself.

With new resolve, the next day she walked up the hill to convince Rosemary West to reconsider

marrying her father.

Rosemary assured Una her refusal had nothing to do with the children,

but quickly changed her mind,

and quickly changed her mind on the refusal when she heard what her father had said.

Una returned to the manse with a note from Rosemary for the minister, and a date was set

for a double wedding, for Rosemary West and John Meredith, and Ellen West and Norman Douglas.

Meanwhile, the children lay in Rainbow Valley after having a feast to celebrate Gemm,

who was leaving the next morning to go to Charlottetown, to the Queen's Academy.
