The Federal Reserve kept interest rates steady for the first time since July, matching Wall Street's expectations.

U.S. stocks were mixed with the Dow closing higher by 12 points, the S&P and the red slightly, and NASDAQ posting gains.

Two Fed officials wanted quarter point rate cuts, but here's some possible reasons why that

didn't happen.

Rate changes take time to work their way through the economy, sometimes many months.

While the central bank says the economy and job markets show signs of improvement. They also say inflation

is still high, so voting members on the committee probably wanted to see if their previous three

rate cuts are doing the trick. For now, anyway. This all comes as the Federal Reserve's independence

is at stake in the Supreme Court, and Fed Chair Jerome Powell faces a criminal inquiry. Powell's

term ends in May this year.

And when asked by CNN, what advice he has for his successor, he responded.

Stay out of elected politics.

Don't get pulled into elected politics.
