Summary

We discuss the tentative ceasefire negotiations in Gaza. Then, we share a conversation with an independent college admissions counselor about what's going on with the FAFSA application this year and how that rolling disaster is impacting students and families across the country.

TOPICS DISCUSSED

  • Tentative Ceasefire Negotiations in Gaza
  • FAFSA Complications with Sara Bittner
  • Outside of Politics: Summer Aspirations

CORRECTION: The Pell Grant does not run out. There are lifetime limits per student on the Pell Grant and basically every other grant that exists is first-come, first-served, but not Pell. Pell is always available. We are in the process of omitting this statement from the episode and will also correct it on Friday's episode.

This is Sarah Stewart Holland. This is Beth Silver's. You're listening to Pantsu Politics, where we take a different approach to the news. Thank you so much for joining us today. We are officially in graduation season, which means a lot

0:34.7

of high schoolers are making big decisions about where to spend the next chapter of their lives.

0:39.3

But the gauntlet of college admissions has become more complicated and pressure filled in recent years.

0:45.0

And this year it got even worse because of what our listener Susan called the absolute

0:49.6

debacle that is FAFSA this year. FAFSA is the free application for the federal student aid,

0:54.8

and it's what nearly every college student fills out

0:56.7

to determine their eligibility for financial aid

0:58.8

and what their final sticker price will be

at the school of their choice.

1:01.6

And we have called Sarah Bitner, longtime

1:04.1

listener and co-founder of Launch Education Advisors to talk us through all of

1:07.4

this. And so you'll be hearing from her in the main segment of the show, but

1:11.0

before we get started we're going to check in on the news

particularly the conflict in Gaza protests surrounding the conflict of Gaza and

1:17.2

the Trump trial and as always we will end the show with what's on our mind

1:20.7

outside of politics and we're going to talk about summer aspirations.

1:23.7

Before we do that, if you missed it, our newsletter has officially made its move over to

1:28.0

sub-stack. We really have appreciated seeing so many of you joining us there. The first post is linked in the show

1:33.8

notes you can check it out. Now that we're on Substack, it is easy to access the

1:37.8

archive of old newsletters. So far we have everything from 2024 there. We'll be moving the last several years over there in time and we are just so happy to have more of a community element around the newsletter that there's more space for you to discuss the things that we're chatting about on the show and in the newsletter.
