An FAA official tells CNN the agency has indefinitely shut down the low-altitude helicopter

corridor that was in use at the time of Wednesday night's fatal mid-air collision.

The move is the most significant action yet by the FAA, since an American Airlines regional jet

and an Army Black Hawk helicopter

plunged into the frigid Potomac River and clear weather. The military helicopter may have been

outside of its approved flight path at a higher altitude than it was supposed to be, and at least

half a mile off the approved route. That's what the New York Times has reported, citing four people briefed on

the matter. In a social media post, President Donald Trump said the Black Hawk helicopter was,

quote, flying too high by a lot. It was far above the 200-foot limit. It's unclear whether the

president's post was based on an official briefing or just speculation. Questions are being raised,

too, about whether the helicopter was adequately staffed in the crowded airspace around Reagan National Airport. Meanwhile,

those who knew the 67 people killed have been paying tribute to the victims, including members

of the figure skating community. After a married pair of skating champions, two young skaters and two of
