And Lisa Brady. Some people call it medical tourism. Others just call it a lot cheaper than having

certain procedures done in the U.S. But that can be risky. Sometimes the techniques or products

used haven't been approved by U.S. health officials.

There have been deadly horror stories in recent years.

The U.K. reporting at least seven British citizens died last year after medical procedures in Turkey.

That's one common destination, along with Mexico.

Still, the CDC says data indicates millions of Americans travel out of the country every year for medical care,

most often for cosmetic or dental procedures, but also for cancer and fertility treatments, rehab,

for substance abuse, even transplants.

So we spoke with Dr. Sheila Nazarian, board-certified plastic surgeon, founder at Nazarian

Plastic Surgery, also a teaching professor in the

Division of Plastic Surgery at the University of Southern California. About why people

leave the country for medical care, the potential risks, the precautions that should be taken,

questions that can help with safety, and why cost should not be the only factor. We made some edits
