Jason Saitaki is my guest this week.

Jason is an artist living in Oklahoma where he teaches painting at the University of Oklahoma.

Jason's paintings reflect his interest in Western art and our perception of the American West, which is so heavily influenced by the Western movie genre.

His series on Cowboys titled Don't Fence Me In plays with the archetypal image of the cowboy as experienced both

through the eyes of adults and pre-adolescent boys.

So a friend of mine, Jen Malone, brought Jason to my attention. Jen had seen an exhibition of his work at the

South Bend Art Museum in Indiana. Now Jen will be the first to admit that she is not particularly into art. But when she wandered into

Jason's exhibition, which included paintings from his series, CB USA, his work

spoke to her and she emailed me about him.

For his series, see the USA, Jason constructed miniature dioramas of Western landscape out of cardboard

and then meticulously rendered the minute details as an oil painting.

In this episode, Jason and I talk about his painting, why he chooses his motifs, his experience

with artist's block, and how he overcame it.

Plus how hard work and persistence has really paid off for him.
