Summary

On this podcast episode, I cover etanercept pharmacology, adverse effects, drug interactions and much more.

Etanercept is classified as a DMARD but is different from older DMARDs in that it is a biologic agent and needs to be injected.

Vaccination assessment in patients is important prior to initiating etanercept due to the fact that the medication may blunt the effectiveness of the vaccines.

Immunosuppression from etanercept can lead to an increased risk for infection and malignancy.

followed potentially by psoriasis and psoriotic arthritis.

1:10.6

It can also be used for ankylosing spondylitis and a few other obscure ones as well, which I won't

1:16.8

mention, but it can be used for a few different immunologic type diseases.

1:23.5

So with that, how does this medication work?

1:28.4

So Eitanercept is essentially a protein that's been developed, and it's considered a biologic medication,

1:39.0

and it has what's called a TNF receptor linked to an IgG molecule.

1:47.4

So what that does is that TNF receptor basically binds up the molecule TNF,

1:56.3

which is tumor necrosis factor.

1:59.5

Now in the body physiologically, TNF plays a huge role in the inflammatory process, which

2:06.5

that makes sense because we're trying to reduce inflammation in something like

2:12.2

rheumatoid arthritis, for example.
