My focus here on the show has always been Caribbean piracy, the West Indies, the New World, and that hasn't really changed.

But I have come to realize that it's a mistake to ignore certain aspects of piracy outside of the new world.

I was attempting to draw a line of influences down from Francis Drake to the greater pirates in the Golden Age,

but I realized that I was missing a major part of the story.

One of the greatest influences on the golden age of piracy

didn't happen anywhere near the new world.
