When Arouge and Hiser Barbarossa captured two Papal Galleys off the coast of Italy, it created a stir in Christendom.

This appeared to be a different breed of Barbary pirate.

For years there had been small boats rowing out of Berber ports looking for

incautious Italian ships, but to sail deep into Italian territorial waters inside of Elba and to capture two well-armed ships, two ships that belong to the Pope himself,

well that was something new.

Were I writing a story, I would use this moment to tell you that the governments of Italy all jumped into action.

All the former crusader kingdoms from Spain to France to Prussia would band together to fight this new menace to the south, but that is not at all what

happened.
