The story of Jewish piracy in the West Indies really begins in about 1640. That's when Protestant

exiles arrived in the Caribbean and found allies in the Jewish population of

Jamaica. However, those Jamaican Jews were already well acquainted with pirates

and piracy, and with the other Jews that already practiced it. That tradition began in the Mediterranean with the Jews from the Iberian

diaspora and with their alliance with the Dutch and the Ottoman pirates of the Barbary

There is a linguistic and cultural heritage dating back to 10,000 b.C.E. maybe earlier. Their name,

Berber people or the Berbers, probably comes from ancient Sanskrit and

down through Egyptian it might actually share a deep root with the word barbarian.
