Nicaragua has a remarkable history, but it can get lost in the malaise of Spanish conquest that defined the new world in the 16th century.

conquistadors. Today's episode is not about the 16th century Spanish conquistadors. More and more I want to tell those stories and I might yet do so but not today.

The reason I bring it up at all is well Nicaragua was an exceptionally well populated colony in the Spanish new world, nothing on Havana or Lima or Mexico

City or even Panama at her height, but there were a lot of people living in Nicaragua. And to call it a colony isn't really accurate either.

It was an administrative district within the Kingdom of Guatemala under the umbrella of

Nueva Espana, which was of course part of the Spanish Empire.

But it was so well populated because, well, Nicaragua didn't have the mineral wealth of Mexico or Peru.
