When you look back on the second buccaneer incursion into the Pacific, you can see that it was really the death rattle of the

buccaneering era of piracy. It's a story of frustration and

incompetence and failure. There was a failed attack on Guayakeel, there was a failed attack on Panama, and a failed

attempt to capture the treasure fleet.

Aside from capturing a few stray merchantmen here and there, the pirates in the Pacific had no real successes.

Now there had been a few smaller prizes taken. Peter Harris the younger had captured

Santa Maria. His crew was well off. They had sacks full of gold dust.

Frankly, I'm surprised that they didn't turn around and return home.

But they weren't rich men, not yet. They stayed in hope of that one huge windfall of Spanish silver.

But it never seemed to materialize.
