We've got a special guest today. Justin Joyner, he's assistant coach at University of Michigan.

0:35.1

Lisa and him were at St. Mary's at the same time was the connection here. And Justin is a wealth and knowledge. We're going to talk three things with him today. Ball screen defenses, you know, pretty much everybody in the world is running ball screens out there, and you have to be prepared to defend ball screens. And depending on what level you coach at, you know, probably, you know, maybe you have two ways to cover it. Maybe you have four. Maybe you have more than that based on how many times you're going to see it and the different types of players you're going to see it. So look forward to diving in to ball screen coverage. We're also going to talk a little bit of building a culture and an ever-changing world where roster turnover is quicker and faster. You know, I know as a division two coach and I was used to coaching guys for four or five years.

And this year is one of our biggest roster turnover. So I'm looking forward to the advice right there. And then there were some great learnings that he's had from working at some really good coaches in the past. So, Justin, welcome. Thanks for joining us. Thank you for having me. I'm pumped to be on. Yeah. Hey, well, let's dive right into some ball screen coach.

First question for you is this, and Sam and I'll... joining us. Thank you for having me. I'm pumped to be on. Yeah. Hey, well, let's dive right into some

ball screen coach. First question for you is this, and Sam and I'll bounce back and forth,

1:32.7

but where do you start the, before we get into the weeds, where do you start the thought

1:37.7

process of ball screen defense? You know, when you have coaches said, hey, I need us to be great

1:43.7

in ball screen defense this

year. Where does the coach start and where does the mind take you? Yeah. Now, I think everything starts with kind of how you guard the ball and kind of your built-in principles. And to simplify, I would say there's, you know, there's kind of the two schools of thought in terms of guarding the ball. You know, there's the programs that are very, you know, they're big on no middle, right?

2:04.3

You got the no middle teams that are going to be big, no middle side pin type teams and kind

2:08.5

of use that type of defense as a way to generate aggression on the defensive end, you know,

2:13.9

with pinning to the baseline and then bringing a second defender.

2:16.6

So you got to figure out

2:17.8

who you are and kind of what you do from a defensive standpoint um obviously i think if you're a

2:23.4

sideman team it makes sense to be an ice team you know your whole principle is keep the ball out of the

2:29.1

middle so it makes sense to be an ice team and and use that as a chance be aggressive, use it as a chance to load the weak side of the floor and put two on the ball usually.
