An all-star activist panel has been assembled to answer Briahna's questions about the strategy and efficacy of contemporary direct actions. Medea Benjamin, co-founder of feminist anti-war organization code pink, Palestinian activist Hazami Barmada, who staged last week's viral "Thanksgiving" demonstration outside of Union Station in DC featuring demonstrators dressed as Trump, Netanyahu, & other war criminals; and Aru Shiney-Ajay, executive director of the Sunrise Movement, all bring their expertise and courage to the question of how direct action can fill the role historically played by organized labor, and how the left can exploit mass protests to greater effect.

| 0:00.0 | We've been in the streets telling people about Palestine and people are like, Pakistan, and I'm like, this has got to be a joke. |
| 0:05.1 | When we were doing stuff in front of Anthony Blinken's home, as he was the active Secretary of State, people said, who's Anthony Blinken? He's the Secretary of State. What is that? Those are people who live in the DMV. And it's not to say that, you know, people here aren't smart or whatever, but if you're, for example, if you're average person, if you're like, who's the secretary of labor, right? If it's not your industry or you don't know, you don't know. And so I think for some of us, one of the biggest awakenings I've had as just a human, as a professional, is how much teaching we have to do to catch people up if we're trying |
| 0:38.8 | to make large-scale systemic change, and we're trying to include the masses. We need to be investing |
| 0:43.9 | a lot more into education, which is a lot of what we do with our political street theaters, |
| 0:47.6 | we hand out flyers to people. We have conversations, and I have to always remind our volunteers, |
| 0:52.9 | do not patronize or talk down to people |
| 0:54.8 | when they have questions. People truly don't know. We've had conversations like, what is Zionism? |
| 1:00.0 | We keep using that word a lot. We've had people straight up ask us, what is Zionism? And so I think it's |
| 1:04.7 | actually really important for us, and one of the things that I've really had to do is interrogate |
| 1:09.1 | how we're approaching education and talking about these |
| 1:11.9 | issues and also understanding that so many of us live in echo chambers and the majority of the |
| 1:16.8 | country, even these communities around us. Like if I went into my neighborhood right now and asked |
| 1:20.5 | people what is happening in Palestine, are you aware of what Israel is doing? I could comfortably |
| 1:25.0 | tell you. Again, I could say this because I've been in the streets for two plus years. People don't know. That is part of what we're realizing needs to happen and what |
| 1:32.8 | I am so inspired by. So many content creators. You have people like you, Brianna, that's doing these |
| 1:38.1 | podcasts, inviting people like us to get into other communities and audiences. Social media |
| 1:43.1 | has allowed us to transform what the traditional |
| 1:45.8 | media does not want people to know about, to hear about, to learn about, even in how they |
| 1:50.3 | present an issue or how they talk about, for example, Israel. People don't know Israel's atrocities |
| 1:55.5 | unless you choose to go out of your way to watch Al Jazeera. And even when you watch Al Jazeera, |
| 2:00.2 | it says, this is state funded. You don't see that for other outlets. And so Lekud funded. This is Likud, Israeli. You don't see that. And so this idea of like, how is information being spread? How are people getting access to information? How can we lean into educating folks about these issues is a very important piece that's overlooked. |
| 2:19.6 | I think that's right, but I'm of two minds on this, Hazami. I got to be the irritating one. |
