Hello everybody, welcome to the Outlander Writers Podcast.

I'm Matt Roberts, executive producer and writer on the show.

This is, like I said, episode 508, famous last words written by Danny Barrow.

As you may have noticed, we're right into the show. We didn't start with the main titles.

This is called, sometimes a tease or sometimes a cold open. After last episode, we found Roger hanging from a tree who wanted to come in and show Roger in his element. He's a Oxford professor, so we wanted to show him teaching and

using all his gifts.

So that's why this scene was presented the way it is and where it is.

Also I wanted to say a little bit sorry about the delay for the podcast once again

during these unprecedented times we have discovered that I am trying to work out all the bugs here in doing the

podcasts from my home office and well I'm working out the bugs.

Hopefully by episode 512 all the bugs will be worked out.

Anyway, we found a class, you know, a room and Gary Steele and his

team turned it into period Oxford. We discovered that Oxford didn't always have those big arenas, those big amphitheatre type rooms.

And so, through our research we discovered they had quite intimate rooms in a lot of

their colleges. So you know I love the intimacy of this. I love that Bree could just walk in, feel comfortable sitting there, didn't really disrupt anything.

In the scheme of things it looked very natural.

This this episode as you've you know a lot of people have already seen it and you're probably

not watching it for the first time as you're listening to this podcast. We talked a lot about in the writer's room the way to get into the character's heads.

A little backstory on voiceover. We initially in season one did a lot of voiceover, a lot more voice

over. And what we learned is it's very difficult to do voice over. Not necessarily for

those of us in the writer's room, it's easy just to take the voice, the inner voice of the character

...
