First, there's a fairly huge running mistake I've been making that I need to address.

A listener from Germany, Hendrik, wrote me to say,

I admire you taking on early German history,

which is exactly the hot mess you make it out to be.

That said, some things you were narrating really made me gasp.

Hendrik pointed out that I've been talking about Baden-Vertemberg as though it were a place.

And it wasn't. The Duchy of Baden-Vertemberg as though it were a place, and it wasn't.

The Duchy of Baden-Vertemberg never existed, ever.

There was a Duchy of Baden, and another Duchy of Baden, and then there was a

duchy of Vertenberg, and today there is a German state called Baden-Vertemberg, but in 1700 there was no such
