Over the past few episodes, we've been discussing some of the regions and peoples of Germany in the early modern period.

We've talked about Austria, Bavaria, Prussia, Hanover, among a few others.

But today we're going to talk about Saxony.

That's another region of Germany, among the largest, and yet it's the hardest to define.

This is episode 348, People of the Knife.

I'm going to be straight with you here.

I don't really know what Saxony is.

I couldn't even exactly tell you where it is.

Sure, I could tell you where the modern German state of Saxony is, or the state of lower

Saxony. And to be clear, when the Germans call something upper somewhere or lower somewhere,

they're talking about altitude. Lower somewhere is almost always farther north.
