Bob Dole was from Russell Kansas, a point he made constantly.

One time I was actually in Russell and I called him from his birthplace to say that I was paying obeisance to where he came from.

He broke up laughing, he loved it.

He was a natural person of a small town and the traditions of small towns where people got to know each other pretty well and where your reputation really mattered.

He was extraordinarily hardworking, he'd been an athlete when he was young and might actually have gone on to a career in professional sports.

But volunteered for the military after Pearl Harbor served in World War II, ended up being in the army in a second lieutenant and all the way to Italy.
