Last time we saw the Bishop Prince's second attempt to take Munster fail.

The failure was partly due to an unseasonable and lengthy spate of wet weather, which was

unrelenting for the first three days of the attack, causing the earthen wall, which had been

painstakingly dug at great expense by the attackers to dissolve into a muddy quagmire.

The failure was mostly due, though, to some impressive defensive work

done by the citizens of Munster under the direction of their leader and military commander

Jan von Leiden, who, despite lacking any experience in military command,

oversaw a successful effort by the women of Munster to repel attackers who were climbing the walls,

and also led an assault against the few attackers who made it over the walls,

effectively blocking them from breaching
