Summary

On this episode, Chewy and Eugene discuss some white belt BJJ tips that came from a Reddit BJJ forum. We break down 8 pieces of advice and discuss whether we agree or disagree with them.

Here is the list:

  1. Never date a girl/guy from the gym, (it’s easier to get better when you enjoy the place where you train).
  2. Stop trying to win. It makes you get hurt. Just get sweaty.
  3. Relax…Jiu-Jitsu is like farting. If you have to force it then it’s probably sh*t.
  4. Baby every injury (also tap quick).
  5. Technique is everything.
  6. Ask questions in person (don’t skip rounds)
  7. Recalibrate intensity and err on the side of too easy.
  8. 2 x a week for 10 years is better than 2 x a day for 3 years.

What up, guys? Welcome to the Tujitsu podcast episode number 336. Today we're going to be jumping into some white belt tips.

0:06.0

The tips can be useful for people other than white belts, but it's going to be a white belts tips video is what we're going with because Eugene recently posted a picture or not a picture, but a post on Reddit.

0:17.5

And a lot of times Reddit can be an interesting place to say the least. You know what I mean?

0:23.9

Sometimes not the most nice place. A lot of people are there just, you know, trolling people,

0:29.5

whatever. They've always been very kind to me and I appreciate you guys in the Reddit community.

0:34.5

But basically, he posted a thing and he said, hey, you know, if you had,

0:40.8

what is a piece of advice you would give to yourself if you were a white belt over, again, that kind of thing. And people posted a bunch of them. And in true Reddit fashion,

0:46.1

many of them were very, like, silly and, you know, quasi-cometic. But many of them were pretty

0:52.7

good, even if they were kind of comedic. We have a few of those. And many of them were pretty good, even if they work in kind of comedic.

0:54.3

We have a few of those.

0:55.4

And some of them, like, were a piece of advice that I actually kind of disagree with,

0:59.2

but I think it gets to an interesting point.

1:01.5

And so what we were going to do today is give you some ideas on jiu-jitsu.

1:04.8

Again, white belt tips, this could be useful for anyone because a lot of these tips I'm looking at, I didn't nail these down until I was in some

1:11.2

cases a black belt. So I mean, these could hit anybody at any level. But, you know, the reason why we say

1:17.0

white belt is because we're saying, if you could have done something better from the beginning,

1:23.4

what would you have done? You know what I mean? That kind of thing. Where as, okay, it took you to

1:28.1

purple belt, to black belt, to five or six, seven, eight, nine years to learn this, what would

1:32.8

you've done if you could have learned it on day one, right? Now, I think the, you can't quite

1:37.7

learn something until you're ready for it. So I think this is where all the mistakes and the,

1:41.2

the difficulties that you have, they plow the field to make you ripe

1:45.1

and ready to receive the information that comes through, right?
