In our super-connected modern world, we tend to take for granted our almost instantaneous access to information.

When a celebrity dies or when a politician says something stupid or when, God forbid, a group of poor bearded

religious radicals attacks somewhere in the world, Twitter might let us know even before the

news has done a write-up about it.

Now I think most of us are actually aware of the Marvel that is modern communications.

We realize that this access is unprecedented, but more and more it's becoming an expected part of everyday life.

I know that personally I tend to expect fresh news every morning as part of my daily ritual.

Well, back in the late 17th century, the world was undergoing a similar revolution. It was nowhere near as instantaneous as what we have today, but news was moving faster than ever before.

Largely, this was due to improvements in their ships.
