For most of us it's difficult to imagine living in a world where we aren't all connected, except

for maybe the oldest among us and those living far, far removed from civilization,

it's probably impossible to remember a time when we weren't connected to the outside world in some fashion.

Today we have the internet and cell phones in our pockets. We could, if we

so choose, call up someone in Egypt while looking up the latest Japanese fashions and emailing someone in Peru.

The news and opinions, the pulse of the world are at our fingertips.

But even before this technological wonderland in which we live, people across the world had access

to cable TV and 24-hour news networks and long-distance phone plans and

my grandmother, she was born in a small town in the Ozark Mountains

during the Great Depression.
