Hello and welcome back to Hackrack. I'm Jed Wolpaw and I am really, really excited to have with me today, one of my graduating residents who has been just such a superstar these past three years.

0:26.0

I'm sad that she's leaving, but excited that she's staying here to do a pediatric anesthesia fellowship.

0:31.8

Dr. Alexis Motes, she is just an incredible person, incredible physician.

0:37.1

She has two wonderful children. She's been the

0:40.4

president of our social media committee here during her residency and has done such an

0:44.3

incredible job with that. If you've ever checked out our Instagram page, you'll know how

0:47.6

amazing the work she's done is. And we thought it'd be really fun to talk about some of the

0:53.6

reflections that she has about her time in residency that aren't really specific necessarily to Hopkins, but are really things that we both thought would be helpful to anyone out there who's either a medical student thinking about residency, a resident who's going through it right now, or even folks in practice who are reflecting back on their own residency and would be fun to

1:10.9

hear what someone who's been super successful thought about and did during the course of her residency.

1:16.1

And then we'll also talk a little bit about social media, how that's playing a role in recruitment

1:20.2

and retention and in the decisions people are making about which programs to rank and programs

1:24.8

about which applicants to rank. So lots of really exciting stuff. And I couldn't be more thrilled to have with me, Dr. Alexis, Moes. Alexis, welcome to the show. Thank you, Jed. You can't see me shaking my head back here on the podcast, but that was a very lovely introduction. You're the best program director that a resident could ask for, and I'm so happy to talk with everybody today about my experience here.

1:44.7

Awesome. So happy. So let's start by talking a little bit about you. Tell the audience as much or as little as you'd like about kind of who you are, how you got here, and what do you think is important in terms of them knowing about you. Sure. So like you said, my name's Alexis Motz. I was born and raised in the Midwest. I'm from South Dakota, which is a real state that actually exists.

I went to undergrad in Atlanta, Georgia, so I had been to the East Coast before, but I've really lived all over the place growing up in many different places because my dad was in medical training when I was a kid.

2:15.6

I did my intern year outside of Maryland.

2:18.0

I actually went to Arizona to get sort of a different experience, which is a very cool

2:23.5

thing that you have offered here at Hopkins, where now we can do an intern year here,

2:28.2

which is fabulous if you don't want to move twice, but you also still have the opportunity

2:32.3

to go somewhere else.

2:34.0

And then I came to Baltimore having never stepped foot here a single time.

2:38.9

We actually got our house before we even moved here and have been here for three years
