In 509, B.C. the Last King of Rome was overthrown. The people and the powerful among them were

done with tyrants and they elected to be governed rather than ruled. They formed a

Senate to debate the issues and to guide them. It was far from a

Democratic body, but it was far better than being ruled over. But there were

two men that sat at the head of the Senate.

They were elected for a limited term.

Now these two men had equal powers, each one was a check on the other,

a guard against the threat of one man amassing too much power.

These were called preators, and later they'd be called consuls.
