So today I have with me, Liselot Diaz Heugberg, who is one of ECDC's experts on antimicrobial resistance.

Can you start off by explaining what antibiotic resistance is?

So maybe we could start with talking about what antibiotics are then.

So antibiotics are medicines used to treat infections caused by bacteria.

And they work by either killing the bacteria or making it difficult for them to multiply.

But sometimes the bacteria can have specific resistance mechanism, meaning that they will continue

to multiply and grow even in the presence of an antibiotic. And they can acquire this resistance

mechanism either through mutations or by sharing genetic material encoding for assistance with each other.

So the development of antibiotic resistance, it's a natural thing, it's evolution, but it is unfortunately accelerated by the misuse and overuse of antibiotics contributing to the selection of resistant bacteria.

And important to note as well is that poor infection prevention and control is also important

because that will allow the resistant bacteria to spread both in the community and in healthcare settings.

So how much of a problem would you then say that antibiotic resistance poses now?
