This week Briahna sppeaks to DNC member, senior advisor to Jesse Jackson, & founder of the Arab American Institute James Zogby about the DNC's latest betrayal: Their failure to even debate a resolution, introduced by Dr. Zogby, to get dark money out of Democratic Party primaries. After seeing how hostile the Democratic Party is to progressives from Jesse Jackson to Summer Lee, does Zogby still see the Democratic Party as a party in which progressives can effect change? Briahna asked him about the structure of the DNC, whether he'd support the "dirty break" strategy, and what it would've looked like if Bernie went 3rd party in 2016.

| 0:00.0 | We've got more voices speaking today. Look, you know, you see those votes and you don't see that as a corrupting influence. |
| 0:06.0 | Of course I do. Of course I do. This has been my life. It's been my life for 40 years. I've been fighting this fight. |
| 0:14.0 | Don't tell me. I mean, I at Hertz. I've been fighting with the Catholic Church to reform. I've been fighting the Democratic Party. I've been fighting Israel Palestine. |
| 0:22.0 | I feel like Sissy Fuss sometimes. You know, I'm just rolling the stone up the hill and it's going to roll back down. |
| 0:27.0 | But when the damn stone is at the bottom of the hill, I can't walk away from it. My job is to continue to try to roll even though I know it may not succeed. |
| 0:58.0 | All right. I'm very thrilled to be joined today on Bad Faith podcast by Dr. James Zogby, who's the founder and president of the Arab American Institute and has been a member of the executive committee of the Democratic National Committee. |
| 1:13.0 | And that's why we're here to talk today what to talk about today, Dr. Zogby. Welcome to the podcast. |
| 1:18.0 | Thank you. |
| 1:19.0 | So if you go on the left at this point, are unaware of the story about what you wrote an article in the nation just today about the fact that the DNC moved to block debate on dark money. |
| 1:31.0 | And you are leading the cause to actually get dark money out of the Democratic Party machine. Tell us exactly what your role was and how this happened. |
| 1:41.0 | Well, I could give you the long version or the long long version start with the long version of the long version just on the resolution on dark money. |
| 1:49.0 | We came to the conclusion after this year's primaries and we saw the role that dark money was playing. I started with Bernie in the 2020 race where the ads in Iowa were I think really damaging to the campaign. |
| 2:03.0 | He's too old, he's a socialist, he's going to cost us down ballot tickets. I mean, people say that it was South Carolina that cost Bernie the victory. I don't. I think it was the negative ads and the way that the party establishment and MSNBC and some of the networks echoed that theme then for the next two weeks after he started winning. |
| 2:23.0 | To tarnish the campaign and make it look like it was a losing proposition. They did it then with Nina Turner in her special election. And then this year there were several races. |
| 2:35.0 | Most disturbing to me was summer lead the way that they ganged up on her and Donna Edwards here and Rashida of course we expected that she'd get it. |
| 2:44.0 | Cory Bush got it and 11 was a very disturbing case because here's somebody who member of Congress comes from a legacy family of really good people and it was pro-Israel groups that ganged up on him to beat him because he wasn't pro-Israel enough for them. |
| 3:00.0 | And the amounts that were spent were astronomical. I mean, 6 million in the Donna Edwards race and more than four in the summer lead. I mean, overall more than 30 million that we counted of just this. |
| 3:15.0 | And there was more because there was Jessica Sistneros and other races need to alarm in North Carolina. There are others as well. |
| 3:23.0 | And so we decided that we'd bring a resolution saying that no dark money in Democratic premieres. I know the Democratic Party relies on dark money in its general elections. |
| 3:33.0 | And when you say dark money, people say, what are you talking about? I got accused of anti-semitism for that. |
| 3:38.0 | No, dark money is a term after McCain fine gold and after Citizens United, it was money that is not reportable and money that's not reportable is called dark. We saw Democrats for the first time using it in massive ways to defeat progressives. |
| 3:54.0 | That was the common theme. Now in earlier elections, you will recall that the D triple C would pick a favorite in a race. You know, they would want the moderate to beat the progressive and they come into a primary. They didn't do it this year. |
