Good morning and welcome to the Increasing Rain Impact Podcast. I'm Justin Sua, episode 2183.

One of the biggest enemies of progress isn't uncertainty, although it might feel like it. It's actually the story we tell ourselves about uncertainty.

When we don't know what's going to happen our ego our emotions it rushes in to create some

meaning or try to create meaning we want to give ourselves this neat little explanation that fills

the gaps and quiets our fears because it's so uncomfortable, the problem with that is the story we might be telling ourselves

could be completely wrong.

And the reason we tell ourselves this story

and try to get this illusion of certainty

that we are right with all these explanations

is because we crave certainty.

It makes us feel safe. But growth and leadership and performance lives in the unknown. We need to learn to tolerate the uncertainty and not

knowing what the future is going to hold. When you can't predict the outcome, that might

signal to a lot of people to stop, to pause, to be stagnant. But it's actually an invitation to

think differently. And instead of trying to know what's going to happen, instead of trying to know what's unknowable, what's more helpful is to seek to understand, to communicate with people, to understand the system, to know why.

Instead of trying to control every variable, that's the time to test, to learn fast, to adapt, to explore.

And I think some of the times what throws people off, what I've seen in my experience,

is our expectations for progress.

We expect it to be a straight line, but the reality is it's up, it's down, it's back,

it's right, it's zigzag, it back, it's right, it's zigzag,

it's it's, it's all over the place. It's iteration after iteration, it's, it's sloppiness,

it's ugly, it feels like chaos. But that's how progress happens. It is through those cycles

of curiosity and feedback and refinement and the messiness.
