Good morning and welcome to the Increase Reimpaq Podcast. I'm Justin Sua, episode 2163. I grew up in Torrance,

California, the Los Angeles County, just minutes from the beach. And like most kids, I loved

building sandcastles. And like most kids, I hated watching the waves come and wipe my beautiful sand castles away.

At first, I'd be frustrated, angry at the waves, angry at the sand.

But as I got older, I realized that the problem wasn't the ocean, it wasn't the sand.

It was me.

It was where I chose to build my masterpiece.

And the same is true in leadership. What you build on determines how strong it's going to be and how long it's going to last. There's a quote I recently read by Dylan O'Sullivan,

and I'm going to adapt it. It says this, quote, constructing your identity around success and results is like sketching your life's work in sand by the edge of the sea. That's the danger of tying your leadership worth to wins and losses. Eventually, the tide comes,

which is why we have to build on things that we can actually control our relationships,

our character, our knowledge, our personal development in every aspect of our lives.

You know me. I'm all about winning. I love to compete. I love systems. I love legacy.

I love processes. I love traditions of winning championships. But if as a leader, your self-worth

and leadership identity rise and fall with the scoreboard or the wins and the losses

of a season, it's all going to come crashing down because those things come and go.

You don't have full control over those things.

So the real question becomes and the question that I'd invite you to consider is when the tide comes and washes everything away, what part of your leadership, your identity as a leader, is still standing?

And the question number two, what foundation are you building on right now that will last the test of time you may not have clear answers right now
