2098. There's a common phrase that says, the scoreboard doesn't lie. You've heard it, I've heard it,

but I want to push back on that thought, because the truth is, the scoreboard actually doesn't

tell the whole story. The scoreboard's actually a lagging indicator because it's the result of things that happen

long before the game even started.

You know what I'm talking about?

It's the conversations during warm-ups.

It's the attention and detail in practice leading up to the game.

It's the way the coach responded during a tough loss.

All of those small, tiny, seemingly insignificant things, those quiet decisions, they stack up.

They compound. And that's what makes coaching difficult. The things that matter most often don't show

up in the box score. There's no stat for how a coach helps a player

regain confidence. There's no rating for how a coach handles tension in a staff meeting, but those

things shape the team's culture. And eventually they're going to show up in how the team performs.

So when a coach sees something they don't like on the scoreboard,

if they're not getting results, the invitation isn't just to fix the play or to fix the

scheme or the fix the roster. It's to rewind the tape even further back and ask, what were we

paying attention to all week? What were we allowing? What were we modeling? Because in the end,

results come from what happens in the shadows when no one is watching and those little things that

no one's paying attention to and even measuring. And coaches that understand this tend to lead teams that are steady they're not perfect

but they're steady and when things get off track they don't panic they just go back to those

invisible stuff and they get to work and so my invitation to you is to pay attention to
