Good morning and welcome to the Increase for Impact Podcast. I'm Justin Sua episode 2097. I was recently

listening to a jazz artist talk about music and describing how great music is created in jazz.

And he's talked about how there's a moment in jazz called The Rest.

He said it's literally called The Rest.

And it's not a flashy solo.

It's not the crashing symbol.

It's not where one person goes and riffs.

It's a space.

It's silence where nothing is being played. But the thing is, it's not empty. It's

intentional. It gives the music its shape. And it made me think about leadership. It made me think

about coaching and how sometimes the most powerful move isn't stepping in, it's stepping back.

And while control feels productive, it feels safe, it feels like that's what leaders do.

The research actually shows another idea that high performing teams, professional athletes, military, even Google's Project Aristotle that

was done many years ago shows that the best leaders don't micromanage moments. They create

environments where the people learn to solve their own problems. They learn to speak up. They're able to stretch without

being rescued. The leader doesn't have to come in and save them. And so what I want to invite you to

do is to consider something called strategic restraint. And to realize that it's not a passive

thing. It's actually precision. It's intentional.

It's trusting that growth often happens in the space between what you say and their decision on whether or not to take action.

It's holding the line and giving them a chance to rise on their own, giving them a chance

to solve their own problems.
